I installed new nvidia 304.22 driver which was released today but it

@Matt @Paul: Your bug is Bug #10 (Ivy Bride). Please follow the
instructions there to install the proposed kernel (comment #63). If you
do not have the confidence to work with the proposed repository, just
wait 2 weeks or so. Linux 3.2.0-27 will fix your issue.

Indeed, a bug report already existed for the bug affecting NVIDIA card
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers/+bug/973096) and as explained in my first message, I am not
using NVIDIA card (as well as many other users affected by this
problem
on my system this bug only affects the nvidia proprietary drivers, It works
good with the free driver.

Using kernel radeon driver (lsmod shows it running).
Normal boot results in black screen. Ctl-Alt-Del reboots; indicating that

I wrote a workaround: x-no-blank-screen.sh and vlc (shell script too),
then placed vlc in the directory listed in the path so that it's called
instead of /usr/bin/vlc. The files are below, but it's a dirty hack
only. Maybe someone will find it useful, though.

As I could not find this bug by title, I reported it on the intel drivers bug
tracker on freedesktop and Chris Wilson's answer (in closing the bug) pointed
me here. He indicated that 3.4 kernels already have the fix.
