After logging into unity or gnome classic, I can't switch users. Goes to

this also seems to affect using a KVM switch that expects double-presses
of Scroll_Lock as a hotkey

I don't know that I can add enough information to solve this for
everyone, but I suspect that I can help for some people. I have two
Dell laptops that have been plagued in 12.04, and I've observed enough
to know that there are probably multiple bugs at work here, and that is
why it is difficult
My wife's Dell laptop had freezes as well. I believe hers was solved by
uninstalling or disabling gnome-screensaver. She finds that if she
never closes the laptop lid, it rarely if ever locks up. I also
uninstalled gnome-screensaver on my laptop, since my forced logouts
almost always came when

same problem with the screen blanking, and I have avoided the lockups by

My Ubuntu AMD64 machine was also seeing hard lockups, with 9800GT video
card. Running Ubuntu 12.04 (3.2.0-31-generic). After trying to the
latest Nvidia Driver (Driver Version: 304.51), without success I
switched video cards (6600GT)
Now no lockups after 3 days but I am seeing the following NEW
The issue seems related to proprietary nvidia driver. When using nouveau
graphics drivers, all goes fine.

I know this is related to fglrx driver. My card is a 4500 HD Radeon. The
resolution is incorrect. It is giving me 1280x1024 and i have a 1600x900
monitor. Fully removing the fglrx corrects the problem. It ran perfectly in
12.04 but not in 12.10. When I run fglrxinfo i get
