hdmi display not detected

immediately after I upgraded to 12.10. After I log in Unity is usable
for a minute or so then it permenantly freezes on both screens. I am
able to work around the problem by not using my external monitor but

the wallpaper, i think compiz crashes
it works when i remove fglrx

Also confirmed that this seems specific to boot-only. When shutting
down or restarting, I see the normal ubuntu logo and activity indicator
dots animating just fine.

Confirming that this affects me also and I'll do some investigating to
get to the bottom of it. At first I thought my Dell Vostro 1500 had a
faulty monitor and I would just have to deal with it but now I suspect
it's the power manager because that controls screen dimming.
