I believe this should be categorized as Ubuntu bug because the x.org display
device driver can display the screen at 1024 X 768 75 Hz NiFF in Ubuntu 11.10.

links, but I'm gathering it was Gnome Shell, which is a universe
package. However, we ship Unity rather than Gnome Shell as the default
environment, Unity does not require anything from mesa-utils currently.

automatic (server side) compositing even when client side compositing is
disabled in the metacity

The issue exists for *all* cards, including the newest, and in the
newest drivers from nvidia. It doesn't remember the setting between
reboots, either, which is very frustrating. And the only reason we did
not report it to nvidia as I recall is we could find no means to do so.
