Using Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 (fresh install), with English + Hebrew keyboards.
Still have the same problem - mostly changing the layout (in the indicator and
by keyboard shortcut) not working.
Some time its just work.

I am building x3270 for AArch64. Patched imake with patch from this bug
and now I have same issue as Matthias:

Hi Marcin,
Try the attached patch (on top of latest upstream). This defines
DefaultGcc2AArch64Opt in xorg.cf . linux.cf includes xorg.cf rather than
xfree86.cf where this was defined in the original patch.

** Patch added: Define DefaultGcc2AArch64Opt in xorg.cf
Alternatively we could just skip defining and using
DefaultGcc2AArch64Opt at all, it seems only used if the arch needs
special optimization parameters (which we don't)

Can someone sum up what we have to do in 13.04 to get rid of the stuck

I found a workaround that works fine for my i5 laptop with nvidia
optimus card.
Install the latest nvidia drivers and reboot. After that the user switch
does work again.
sudo apt-get install nvidia-319 nvidia-settings-319 nvidia-prime

I can second what I mentioned elsewhere: This is *not* related to
nouveau. Nor is it related to Compiz effects.
I get these symptoms maybe 10-20 per day: Screen freezes. Music/sound
continues to work. Can move mouse but not click. Keyboard unresponsive.
After maybe 10s the system comes back up.
Fix committed into lp:unity/7.1 at revision None, scheduled for release
in unity, milestone 7.1.2

I am using the radeon graphics drivers on x86 and I have found that
since upgrading from 13.04 the system seems to use less memory (as
reported by top) but Firefox suffers from the bug descriped herein.
It seems to be a bit worse when the system is under load, but in general
when multi-tasking
Further to my previous comment with a bit more experimentation, I think
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/968533/comments/27 is my problem.
