For your crt/lcd monitor - maybe this issue depends on the resolution
of the external screen.

- the external monitor is connected at boot time, I disconnected it when
the login screen is displayed, logged in, no high cpu usage
- logged out, connected the monitor, logged in, HIGH CPU USAGE
- logged out, disconnected the monitor, logged in, no high cpu
A note for all those commenting on this, my understanding is that if the
fix in comment #6 does not work around the problem then you are seeing a
different bug.

Here is the xorg logfile from the situation where it dumps core. It's

Apparently, X finds a different list of hardware, tries to use the ATI

For what its worth, running 3.13.7 greatly mitigates this bug, to where
the dead time is barely noticeable. It happened three times in short
