For what its worth, running 3.13.7 greatly mitigates this bug, to where
the dead time is barely noticeable. It happened three times in short
order here and I didn't notice any of them:

The phantom display is being reported by -nouveau, but the flickering
cursor is an artefact of PRIME. Odd as there should be no reason for it

CPU: i5-460M (Ironlake GPU)
libdrm: 2.4.52-1
libdrm master contains only some fixes for Freedreno, a FreeBSD platform
fix and a change in the test suite. I believe that updating libdrm in
Ubuntu won't help in this

I rebooted into up to date trusty and noticed Unity was incredibly slow.
I hadn't rebooted in a while, so I'm not sure what package caused the
issue, though I'm guessing it is mesa (I saw i965 pci ids were ifdef'd

Confirmed. Here's what I just reported in a duplicate:
After updating today Unity only starts in software rendering mode. I can tell
because:
1. There's no dash blur.
2. Graphics performance is slow.
3. .xsession-errors says:
libGL error: failed to open drm device: Permission denied

By the way, on re-reading this bug report, I realized that I gave you
some wrong information. I now remember what I had to do to get the
laptop mouse working again. Basically, I had to purge out all of the
gnome/ubuntu desktop configs in my home directory

crw-rw 1 root video 226, 0 Apr 3 19:38 card0
crw-rw 1 root video 226, 64 Apr 3 19:38 controlD64
This seems to be normal. I also was not in the video group, however if I
add myself to the video group, logout and back in, then I don't have the
.xsession-errors
This looks like bug 1292675. Although this bug seems to have suddenly
started affecting some people such as myself just today. So I'll hold
off making this a duplicate of bug 1292675.

Actually, I did get it happening once with 204-5ubuntu15 but mostly it's
fine now. The intermediate nature of the problem does support the theory
that it is rooted in some older changes, per bug 1292675 and its
duplicates.
