I had similar problems with random freezes after upgrade Xubuntu from 13.10 to
14.04. on my Desktop PC (Acer Aspire 3100).
Distro: Ubuntu 3.13.0-24.46-generic 3.13.9.
First I thought that the problem causes Xorg, but then I changed my
driver from 331 to 304. With 319 there where the

Right, I'm using Mint 16 XFCE which is based on Ubuntu 13.10 AFAIK.
(I don't have much experience with Mint either. I just needed a usable
distribution on my laptop quickly and didn't have time to try much.)
