What an odd response. I'm not reporting a new problem I'm offering a solution.
Surely it would be more useful if the original reporter tried blacklisting the
modules which I suggest.
If he confirms that this is the required fix then what hardware I've got or
kernel I'm running is irrelevant.

The latest Catalyst beta (14.6 Beta, released 07/14/2014) solves my
problem. I have a fully functional video now.

When using the touchpad and moving the pointer, upon releasing my finger
from the touchpad, the cursor often jumps a few pixels.
MIght be related to bug #1042069, though movement is fine, it's just
upon releasing the touchpad that the cursor jumps.

Hi,
I've been fiddling around with this for a while. Booting with init=/bin/bash
allowed poweroff -f to work.
So I then booted into full userspace and started to rip modules out with rmmod.
It appears that the laptop has a Synopsys DesignWare controller embedded in it.
This makes the kernel load

You need to edit the file /etc/default/grub
$ sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Go to the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" an
Ubuntu 12.10 is EOL (no longer supported). If you do not like to upgrade,
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is highly recommended since it is supported for 5 years.
If you can reproduce your issue with a supported version, please file a new bug
report.
