Public bug reported:
While I have not ever realized that it crashed, it appears that xorg
creashes from time to time (every other day or so) on my Thinkpad 440s

are fresh core dumps in /etc/X11/core, therefore I do not know
I've backported the upstream patch to the xserver-xorg-video-intel
package from utopic-updates and can confirm that it fixes the broken
window shadows for GTK+ 3.14 apps that use client decorations (e.g.
gedit).

Unfortunately I cannot find a way to update the bios in this laptop :(
The BIOS exetuble privided by Toshiba, is a windows-only binary and it
doesn't run with a FreeDOS bootable USB.
No windows in this machine, so I guess I will have to stick with the old
working version of the nvidia drivers.
nouveau.config=NvMSI=0 does seem to work around the problem. A patch
to disable MSI on these chips was linked in the upstream bug report:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87361
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/nouveau/2014-December/019417.html
dmesg still mentions MMIO write
Updated to the latest BIOS. Output of that command:
FYBYT10H.86A.0045.2014.1212.1150

No change; the same problems are seen.
I'm attaching a screenshot of the 3rd issue mentioned in the original
post, which is the least frequent to occur.

Hi Ari.
I've been using Cinnamon since it works. But I've also updated my
release since this bug, so now I have all new new drivers, X and X libs,
and a newer version of Synapse. I don't even know if the bug still
exists with the lighter WMs, as I haven't gone back to to try it again.
