On a fresh install I get the following when trying the above solution on
3.16.0-37-generic.

I was going to upload syslog with the correct info (what ubuntu-bug
uploads seems only about since current boot).
It seems the freeze is that severe (nothing on 3.19.0-17) or early that
nothing gets appended to syslog.

I was able to resolve this on trusty doing the following:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-intel (and all the
depends)
then reboot.
Just FYI, i'm on -30 kernel, and using ubuntu-mate as as desktop.

After some patches to 14.10 the issue appears to have disappeared. At a guess I
would say a kernel update has resolved the issue.
I have since upgraded to 15.04 and it is working without issue.

I'm testing pure EFI boot capability on my iMac 7.1 (graphic card ATI radeon
HD2600 pro).
So far, with Ubuntu 14.10, i've been able to boot directly into a perfectly
working system using the EFI kernel stub.
No GRUB, no ELILO, no rEFIND, no boot manager whatsoever!
