I've managed to fix the problem. Turns out lirc was the culprit here.
Uninstalling lirc and making sure that the file with my keymaps is in
/etc/rc_maps.cfg solves the problem.

I've put together a walk-through in case anyone is struggling with this.
I have enabled root logins on my computer but realise that this isn't
there by default. I have therefore put together something that should
work on a standard setup without leaving a mess behind :-)
From a console
This bug can be solved by revert the computer to 14.04LTS, this has
worked for the Thinkpad as also for the Ideapad. Both computers start
with the same brightness level as at last shutdown. So i'm out now and
can't do further investigations.
