One issue I've hit is that with mesa 11 rc2 installed, Unity will no
longer run under qemu (note I'm testing with an amd64 VM, Wily host and
Wily guest).

Same problem on IBM System x3400 M2, Ubuntu 14.04.3. Zoltán Maróti
solution indeed improved the graphical interface. The problem here is

loading lightdm renders an unreadable screen with green squares or blue
lines . I wonder

Add xserver-xorg-video-ati as a dependency for ubuntu-desktop/ubuntu-

Please backport this feature to Ubuntu 14.04.

Trying to solve #874694 (only getting 640x480 maximum resolution instead
of 1024x768), I see also an Amilo L6820 with Intel 82845G/GL/GE Chipset.
This blocks my attempts to force the screen resolution at xrandr level.

The xserver-xorg-video-all metapackage in trusty for ppc64el does not
depend on the per-hardware video driver packages, only on xserver-xorg-
video-dummy. This would need adjusted in xorg.

The graphical splash screen is disabled on NVIDIA's proprietry drivers,
since they won't work properly with framebuffers and will cause
instability. I believe this will all be fixed as part of their wayland

Have you tried the *vga=###* where ### is one of the valid VGA values,
using this on the GRUB linux kernel line? This has worked for me on some
recent kernels/x-servers where xrandr can't force the screen resolution. I
have used this with *nouveau.noaccel=1* and sometimes *acpi=off* in problem
