well, I suggest to give a try to the latest propretary nvidia drivers and see
how the kernel works with them.
Then we will be able to understand if it is a linux or nouveau problem.
So go on in this way, remove the three packages of the kernel 4.2.0-996 via
synaptic (searching for
Witold Szczeponik, please do not mark this a duplicate of another
report, or vice versa.
Instead, it will help immensely if you filed a new report via a terminal:
