The proprietary nvidia drivers work great. No issues so far. also some
other things seem to render better with these drivers (such as tooltips
in chrome).

You are right, upgrading the BIOS did help and the problem went away.
I'm still curious why this BIOS problem only appeared after upgrade to vivid.

any of these packages APT wants to remove all packages related to
ocl-icd-libopencl1. Well, while looking at the nvidia packages I noticed that
all nvidia-libopencl1-* packages want to replace
Thanks for the finding. Indeed mine was also found fglrx in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-local.conf. Not sure how it happened, cos I
was upgrading from 11.04 > 11.10 > 12.04 > 14.04. Spent so much time to
figure out this problem! :)
