Since upgrading to Ubuntu 15.10, X.org crashes intermittently. The
screen will suddenly turn black, and after a few seconds, the LightDM
login screen appears. All unsaved work is lost of course.
A clean install of 15.10 did not help, the problem persists.

Solution in my case was 'apt-get install pam-kwallet5'
If this helps here too, then it might be worth looking at how events
from multiple displays are handled, when they're actually from a common
all-displays
On my system /usr/share/X11/xorg:conf:d/20-intel.conf did not exist.
Creating it with the following content solved the crashes:
me@host:/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d# cat 20-intel.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "Intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

libxfont: FTBFS: dh_install: libxfont-dev missing files
Same on Assus K555L with KDE, the problem stooped or at least occurs rarely
when ever you stop the turn of touch pad functionality on key enter form
synaptic touch pad set up in System Settings->Input Device->Touchpad->l.
Enable/Disable touch.
pad. And remove Disable touch pad when typing .

Had the same problem, in particular reproducible crashes when de-
maximizing libreoffice writer. Disabling SNA as suggested by Mark
Nitters above fixed it, but also instead installation of intel's latest
drivers from here https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/intel-graphics-
[Expired for xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) because there has been
no activity for 60 days.]

Severe OpenGL rendering issues in games

Thank you Axel for pointing to the intel drivers. I installed the latest
drivers and enabled SNA again. It looks as if it takes longer to crash
now, but eventually it does. Prior to the update it was easy for me the
reproduce a crash with LibreOffice Calc. That requires a bit more effort
now. I
Compiz is indeed running, but it is refusing to manage the window.
Looking at the Compiz code, there are only two ways that it will not
manage a newly created window:
"if (w->priv->serverFrame == event->xcreatewindow.window)"
and
"if (wa.root != event->xcreatewindow.parent)"
Those will prompt
