FWIW my Elantech touchpad on Asus GL552VW only works on the 4.2 and
4.4.0-11 kernel if I continuously touch the touchpad before the login
screen appears.
Happens on Linux Mint 17.3 (KDE) and Kubuntu 16.04.

it happens not only if you decrease the resolution, but also with the

I faced this problem in Toshiba Dynabook SS RX1 SE120e/2W notebook
External Display works only when connected at the boot time and the same
External Display if connected after boot, there is no Display at all.

The latest kernel ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc7-wily/ ) is affected by a freeze, too. I'm not sure
