Public bug reported:
My laptop is running Xubuntu 16.04 and recently (don't know when
exactly) started showing very sluggish display and input behavior:
- Typed input lags several characters behind.
- Mouse input is slow (e.g. when drag and dropping elements)
- /user/lib/xorg/Xorg uses high
It turns out that simply unchecking the VLC option "Accelerated video
output (Overlay)" in Preference > Video > Display solves the issue.
Maybe this is just a small VLC bug?

Things I've tested which haven't made a difference:
* Copy /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel/xorg.conf to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
* Running with the drm-intel-next kernel
Also verified that xenial still doesn't exhibit any issues by booting a
live image, so it isn't an hw issue.

After I uninstalled the 16.04 nvidia-340 package, rebooted (so using
Nouveau), then installed the nvidia-340_340.96-0ubuntu6_amd64.deb
package, Steam and other programs seem to be working fine now.

This affects me too on Mint 18 with Cinnamon. I'm using the modesetting
DDX driver instead of xserver-xorg-video-intel. If there's anything I
can do to help gather information, let me know.

It's the hardware. Response from Asus:
