Have resolved the issue by installing yakkety kernel:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-kernel-team/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-image-generic-lts-yakkety

Thanks Brian for the suggestion.
Sorry, the only "package" that I can guess that it could be xorg. I have
attempted to get help in the IRC chat at FreeNode, but instead I got
just questions. I asked for assistance to identify a package name three
times during a 30 minute session and got no help.
Public bug reported:
Trying to setup multiple mouse pointers following the guide:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Multi-pointer_X
Causes unity to crash and takes the user back to the login screen.
The commands seem to work but when the user moves the second mouse, it
instantly crashes.
I use Ubuntu Studio 16.04 with XFCE4 4.12 and I had that problem too,
but exploring the "Extend to the right" option and then returning to
"Displays", "Mirror Displays" option is already accessible.
Unfortunately, unplugging the another monitor and plugging it again, may
recquire select first
I disabled compositing and the flicker went away, but I now get some
funky mouse trails that don't get cleaned up when crossing the edge
between monitor 1 and monitor 2.

Public bug reported:
the most bothersome, most notable, and most curious symptom of this bug
is the absolute degree to which the display locks up. xclock's seconds
are no longer changing, the mouse cursor won't move, and even ctl-alt-F1
does nothing.

I have the latest and greatest of Ubuntu (Gnome) 16.04.1 LTS. (It is an
