4.8 works fine for me, too. All release candidates of 4.9 caused regular
system freezes instead. Didn't test the final version of 4.9, though.

"modesetting" (drm) driver loaded and the xorg-server running will cause

I can confirm that the bug disappears after switching to a newer kernel
than Ubuntu's 16.04 main one. 4.8.10-040810-generic did the trick.

I think the exact same thing happened with the previous upgrade.
I have a laptop and I often connect an external monitor. I had it set up
so that when I connect it, the laptop's builtin display turns off and
the external one works as the only display.

Hello.
I have a laptop with two graphic cards, one integrated and one dedicated. The
relevant lines in lspci are:

I've just encounter the bug since I add 'drm.debug=0xe' on the boot command
line.
I hope logs could help, it was hard to launch apport-collect because it is
impacted too :-(
