This appears to have been silently fixed as from the 16.04 HWE linux
kernel.
I have tested this on:
• 16.04 64-bit, kernel 4.8.0-45 installed with linux-generic-hwe-16.04
• 16.10 using a Live CD
• Today's 17.04 daily build using a Live CD
I suppose that this can be marked as solved. Pity it
Update: WARNING: The notebook switches off after a half an hour use. Power
management problem?
After three hard poweroffs/reboots I switched back to Nvidia setting in BIOS
(Optimus off).

reliably reproduce this bug, but i see it happen occasionally when
running apps with Xmir, video players, games)

For gtk, instead of changing the probing order, is it possible to set
GDK_BACKEND=x11 for the launched app specifically when u-a-l/libertine-
launch spawn xmir instead?

So this is being blocked by onscripter autopkgtests failing on qemu.
Notes so far
- happens only with qemu
- test fails only if Xvfb was started from the same shell (as is the case with
xvfb-run)
- test runs fine if Xvfb was started from another shell..
- trying to strace the test makes it
@tinga: What exactly didn't work for you?
For me, replacing synaptics with libinput (as in #32) did the trick.
Then I also had to write a little bash script to reduce the speed:

xinput -set-prop 11 281 -0.75

or you could set this in 90-libinput.conf, as in #38 and #39.
