Had the same problem on a Dell PowerEdge T430 with Ubuntu 16.10.

This is an old issue. It used to cause problems with Unity8 too (see bug
1535297).
A proper fix needs to come from protobuf itself, but the bug could also
be avoided if Mir or your app were willing and able to change protobuf
versions.
