It appears the nouveau kernel driver is crashing, which may well be the
main problem here. And thanks for testing kernel 4.20 already.
As a workaround please try installing the official Nvidia driver.

Those stack traces in the log are unfortunately likely unrelated to any
gnome-shell freeze. And I assume the freeze is the main issue that
you're reporting(?).

And... spoke too soon. It happens under xrender as well. Shorter
freezes, frequency is the same.

After setting HandleLidSwitch=ignore (and also
HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore) in /etc/systemd/logind.conf, the screen
