I installed v2.6.31.3 kernel per Valeriy, works fine now. Mouse pointer
is also visible on boot up, reference bug 439066.

What stable version do you recommend?
How do I install new kernel?
What is PPA? I was following instructions here:

Correction, it is not glxgears which makes mouse pointer visible, it is
launching a terminal which makes mouse pointer visible.

Using Bleeding-Edge setup, none of the other setups work at all. The
mouse pointer is not visible immediately after boot up. If I run
glxgears, mouse pointer appears and is visible all the time.
