After some research on the topic, I have found that this is an extremely
common problem with the Thinkpad x40. Have you tried reverting back to
the Karmic Kernel yet? (see

Fill me in on a few things. Are you useing an integrated VGA adapter,
and are you useing a 32-bit distro on a 64-bit machine? I had a similar
problem with both. After installing a seperate VGA adapter, the problem
subsided and did not happen as offten, and after installing a 64-bit
distro, the prob
