I upgraded to Maverick 5 days ago, and I haven't seen any sync flash
since then. So I consider that the bug is fixed in Maverick. I have a
8086:2a42 video card on a Dell Latitude Z600.

Since the last kernel update (version 2.6.32-24.42), I haven't seen any
flickers. I DON'T use i915.powersave=0.

I have a 8086:2a42 video card and successfully used the i915.powersave=0
option to stop the sync flashes.
I installed Andy Whitcroft's kernel and removed the i915.powersave=0
option yesterday. Everything continue to work fine ; no sync flashes at
all.
@Peter : it seems that FBC means FrameBuffer
I am also affected by the flashes on the screen on my Dell Latitude Z600
since I upgraded to Lucid 64bit. Here are the details of my video card :
