I had this problem on a Toshiba Tecra A10-104 using Linux mint 17.3 XFCE (based on U14.04) with Intel GM45 onboard graphics. Updating from a 3.x kernel to the latest 4.4 one fixed the problem for me, with no regressions found so far. :)
