You could probably just use 'xrandr --auto', at least that worked for me. I have actually now a different 'fix', by simply never having the system notice the hdmi-link goes down. I used this wiki-page to fix that for my Intel Haswell-cpu graphics.

BTW, I also installed the new firmware for the wireless network card with b43.fw-cutter as indicated in the Hardware drivers item on the same menu as where the STA driver can be found after temporarily deactivating STA. I didn't notice any problems with updating the firmware, but it didn't do away
