Experiencing the very same problem with 11.10. Used it since Alpha, bug
appeared sometime in beta phase IIRC.

XF86ScreenSaver is grabbed by gnome-screensaver. Killing it caused my
XF86ScreenSaver (Fn-F3) to go dead, i.e. not lock the screen.

If I issue xset dpms force off in a terminal (xfce session), the screen goes
blank and the backlight turns off, just as intended. Sometimes though (ca.1 out
of 10), the screen doesn't wake up again. The system seems to be locked up
completely,

When I click lock screen in the indicator-applet-session menu, my
screen is locked properly, but the TFT backlight isn't turned off.
Executing xset dpms force off in a terminal does turn the backlight
off though.
