OK, to continue my saga...this seems to have been caused by the (broken)
transition made from grub to grub2 with the coming of 9.10. I followed
the directions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2 and was able to fix
things...and (so far) no crashes. But knock on wood.

I checked, and sure enough, I am booting into the old kernel from 9.05.
But grub doesn't list the new kernel. I went in and changed menu.lst and
nothing I do seems to have any effect on what is display at boot time. I
can edit the kernel name to boot, and boot into 2.6.31-14-generic, but a

Same problem on Dell Inspiron 700m. If someone can tell me how to debug
mouse problems, I'll start working on it. But, I might just download a
CD and do a fresh install if I don't get some info on howto debug, and
