Upon installing the 3rd party nVidia version 390 drivers for the Dell
E6520 laptop, after reboot hangs with a black screen and a blinking
cursor in the upper left hand corner. Booting to a terminal prompt and
using "sudo apt remove *nvidia*" and rebooting solves the issue.
There are in fact two problems this one where the desktop environment
fails to start and another where the password prompt is not shown in
plymouth as testing this again without the NVidia drivers I failed to
get a desktop environment.

I am also experiencing this issue. I was using 18.04.5 and did not have
the issue. I did a new install of 20.04 with the same hardware and the
problem started. It continues after upgrade to 20.10.
