Public bug reported: Tried doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 on my rig outfitted with an HD 7850, and it crashes on boot due to my AMD card installed. When I removed the AMD card I was able to boot into Ubuntu. AFAIK, the drivers with Ubuntu should support this card even though it is older, and even I'm incorrect and it isn't supported, xorg should probably fail more gracefully than a segfault, thus the bug report.
Note that I wasn't able to even install Ubuntu in the first place without modifying grub to set radeon.modeset=0 due to the black screen issue. I believe this modeset might have been set when the crash occurred. This issue is reproducible every time. root@brak-desktop:/etc/X11# lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Release: 16.04 root@brak-desktop:/etc/X11# apt-cache policy xorg xorg: Installed: 1:7.7+13ubuntu3 Candidate: 1:7.7+13ubuntu3 Version table: *** 1:7.7+13ubuntu3 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status BT not too helpful, but included nonetheless.
