I have the same problem on Ubuntu 20.04 with a ATI Radeon HD5770.
Setting VDPAU_DRIVER=none works here, too.

get-edid does not show the EDID of the monitor with the broken EDID.
Booting 11.04, the monitor *works fine*. Nontheless dmesg shows the
following, which is nearly the same as on 11.10 and 12.04:

Booting the system with both displays attached shows only the working
monitor in the display settings.
When booting the system with only the non-working monitor attached
actually shows the desktop on the non-working display, but in a wrong
resolution - and the display settings application does

After upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10, the second display is not
recognized anymore.
It's an amd64 system with a Radeon HD 5700 graphics card.
