I am using a laptop hooked to an external monitor. The laptop display is
off in display preferences, and is off when logging in. However, when
I switch to a virtual console (ctrl-alt-f1) both displays are used. Then
I switch back

Note: this works using the 2.6.31-1 kernel on the same computer.
Using an up-to-date karmic, when using the key combination Ctrl-Alt-F1,
I do not get a console. Instead, the screen freezes and I get the weird
color corruption on the background, as
