I'm using the Tear Free option at the moment, but screen refresh is
terribly slow, even when used over a LAN. It appears to be refreshing
entire screens at a time, which is what I presume the noxdamage setting

I have the same problem with vino-server in an oneiric system with a ATI
Video (ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD 4250]), but not running the
fglrx proprietary driver. What I get is a session with sporadic updates
- I can get the screen updated by wiping a terminal window around the
screen. So
