On the lower right corner of the display, a watermark with it's text
"AMD Unsupported hardware" is displayed. On the system, a Sapphire
Radeon HD5830 is installed (see lspci).
The system and the fglrx driver itself are working neatlessly (at

Xorg always freezes at gdm login prompt (reproducable). Xorg
automatically start itself with vga16fb driver.
- Ubuntu Lucid Beta1 2.6.32-19-generic
- xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu1
- xserver-xorg 1:7.5+3ubuntu1
Hardware: Maxdata Pro 600I
I've tried Lucid Beta 1 which provides xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.9.1-1ubuntu13. Same is still happening, though X.org now seems to
detect the crash and starts itself with vga16fg to have control of the
system.
Do I need to file a new bug for Lucid, or do you want to tag this bug
accordingly?
Using Rogers PPA xorg server 5:2.8.0-2-gb0aa94f and the actual main
kernel 2.6.31-16-generic did not solve the problem. Xorg was freezing at
GDM login prompt.

So this one seems to work pretty stable on Maxdata Pro 600i

Dear Geir,
following the URL you posted in bug 447892
(http://www.kvante.info/855GMfreeze/) I get an HTTP error 403 Forbidden.
Is there an other place to get the kernels?

Setting acpi=off as kernel parameter helps! System has now been stable
for more than 10 minutes. (but anyway, the system fan is now driving me
bananas.)

Kernel option 'nomodset' does not solve the problem, neither does an
modset=0 in newly created /etc/modules.d/i915-kms.conf. Driver crash is
not due to enabled KMS im my opinion.

I just realised, this also happens on Karmic Koala Live-CD (just wanted
to do a fresh install). So the i915/855 problem is not only depending on
an upgrade from Intrepid.

I can confim this behaviour on Maxdata Pro i600 Notebook. After
upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 the display freezes and cannot be restarted
at all. The system is fully available from network (i.e. ssh shell) and
can be shut down or restarted. System load is ~1 although 100%idle on
CPU.
