Hello. Original reporter here. Sorry for not responding. Problem was solved by reverting the xorg driver as suggested by Eddie Padilla above. The trick to getting around the "startx" command problems that I had reported earlier was to use ctrl+alt+F7 instead. For whatever reason, that worked. T
