I briefly suspended the laptop, upon resuming the unlock screen password
dialog box was presented but the cursor was frozen and I could not move
the mouse, it was also not possible to input anything into the text
field to unlock.

So I've not seen this in the last two weeks I've been away which could
mean something... or it means that something else has happened in the
meantime which has resolved the issue.

Yes those times correspond to when the system became unresponsive.
Unfortunately I've not found an activity that provokes it more often
than anything else. I'm getting about 1-2 of these per day currently.
I will try using unity2d to see if the events occur there.

Must admit, this appears to have stopped happening.
The functionality still doesn't work but it doesn't seem to
introduce a GPU hang any longer... it just doesn't output to the
external screen at all.
I'll close the bug unless I can reproduce it on a current system.
