I had this problem on gnome 14.10,15.04 and now on 15.10. I a running HP
all in one desktop, amd radon video . It shows as being installed but
boots to black screen. Have to purge fglrx to be able to boot.It also
happens with fglrx-updates too.

Yes when I try to install from add. drivers it just stops an d reset to
default. On using apt or synaptic it says broken pqackages un met
dependacies.

I pined down nvidia on the 96 driver. They have no desire to do
anything to update or maintain this driver, nor or they interested in
allowing any one else to fix it. Is it possible that the open source
driver could be made to work.I have tried the latest mageia release with
same kerrneol as 12.04
I read On nvidia site That the legacy 96 driver will no longer be
supported but they will continue to maintain it.Not sure what that
means, but hope it will work on 12.04.

I went out and found me a nvidia video card because I was useing a
tottally unsuported video card. After searching the internet to find
away to install ubuntu with the new nvidia, I now find it wont work
either.I need the nvidia-96 and cant get it either for 12.04. How about
a fix from ubuntu? tha
12.04 has the same results. I installed xubuntu 12.04 It gives me more
display options and works fine. Did an upgrade to ubuntu 12.04 through
synaptic. Gnome and unity stiil dont work. I can log back into xubuntu.
and it woks fine. I would expect both desktops to use the same xorg
trident driver,
I have installed linux mint 12. Gnome 3 still does the same thing.
However in mate it installs it correctly. It looks like gnome 3 is using
the wrong xorg trident driver. I would expect it to be the same in both.
This is a bug in the xorg trident driver and should be reopened. Thanks

the card that I am using is a apg/vga 3d video card. Vessa is a generic
driver with limited functions.. Its like running in safe mode. You have
less adjustment and lower resolution. Xorg is showing it as a vesa
driver. which is ok if you dont mind fuzzy and distorted pictures. I
have used ubuntu
I can not believe I am the only one who has this problem. Trident sold a
lot of these video cards.Im either need a fix for this or change to
another distro that recognizes my video card.My screen flickers all the
time and all words are blured and vesa does not recognize my 3d
excereration. help ple

After last gdm update I can now boot into gdm without failsafe. I am

I am having this problem in karmic. Never had it on any other version of
Ubuntu.I just like to use mouse to shut off screen saver. Would like to
keep bug open. Ther is no way to get to settings for screensaver.
