This bug happens on my system as well. Everything worked fine in 10.10,
and now the system freezes after 5-10 seconds when I log into a window
manager that uses compositing (kwin, compiz, ...). Rebooting is the only
option.

Using xorg-edgers doesn't solve the problem. Disabling ACPI doesn't
solve the problem. There are no newer nVidia drivers available at the
time of writing.

Every 3D application I have tried so far works fine, from glxgears to
the Phoronix test suite benchmarks.

I am using an nVidia 560 Ti card.
