Public bug reported:
The monitor U2414H is not detected by Ubuntu, the graphics card
displayed in settings is llvmpipe (LLVM 8.0, 256 bits). I believe it
should be "Intel Iris Plus Graphics", which is what shows up in Windows
Device Manager (my device is set up to dual boot).

Hi Christopher,
No backport required by me thanks. Alain Rouet's work-around solves this
problem.
Thanks, Dominic.

That's a clever trick, being able to downgrade dependencies like that.
Any pointers on how one goes about doing it, since even if I add
'trusty' sources to `/etc/apt/sources.list' then I still only see a
single version available to install if I run `apt-show-versions xserver-
xorg`?
Anyway, great
Thanks for your suggestion but bumblebee was not installed. However,
after switching the driver to the nvidia-update Branch and the Destkop-
Manager from GNOME to Unity, the problem vanished. So this might as well
be a GNOME problem, thus i'm marking it as invalid.
** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)
Actually i tried both ways. Switched via driver manager from Nouveau to Nvidia
331.38 (proprietary, tested) and since this did not work i tried sudo apt-get
install nvidia-331
Both lead to the same behaviour described above. I'm stuck at the loading
screen and no login screen ever shows up

I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad W540 containing an internal intel and a
nvidia graphics card.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA

The resolutions on both monitors are correct. I'm happy to answer any
questions or to try (simply) to fix it.
Thanks, Dominic

I noticed the same problem. I'm running Lucid, but the corrupted text
rendering appeared after I manually upgraded xserver-xorg-video-intel.
Lucid has version 2.9, and reverting to that release fixes the issue for
me, but all versions between 2.11 and 2.13 exhibit the symptoms
described in this
Yes, 605967 looks similar, but the original post was for Ubuntu 10.04,
which never froze on my system, even after I gave up on 10.10 and
reinstalled Lucid.

I can confirm this problem on a Thinkpad X60s running Jaunty. I
regularly switch between two machines using a KVM, and every time I go
back to the Thinkpad the external keyboard's repeat rate is too slow,
while the laptop's keyboard is fine.
