It's not a bug that misconfiguring the touchpad black-screens Ubuntu?
Is that as user-friendly as Ubuntu aims to be?

The synaptics.fdi is a hack I found on the web. Reviewing `man 4 synaptics`
now, I
see some of the datatypes specified in the .fdi are wrong for the named fields.
When I correct the types, the X screen comes live. So maybe some part of
the X stack has become less tolerant of bad .fdi data?

Hmm, screen live again after removing the attached
xorg-disable-synaptics-touchpad-3.patch,
then running:
apt-get --reinstall install xorg xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-all
xserver-xorg-video-all
Guess I'll have to find another way to disable the touchpad ...
