I had this problem in a Packard Bell easy note under Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 with an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03). I installed the pre-released updates and I can confirm the problem has been solved at least for my computer. Thank you

Today I installed some pre-released updates of compiz and other packages, related with bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg- video-intel/+bug/419328, but the problem remains. I guess they are completely different bugs. I just had some hope... -- LOOSING CONTROL OF EXTERNAL MONITOR.
