I have the same problem: Bug #899531 (already marked as duplicate). Since I removed Ubuntu 11.04 and installed 11.10, the system crashes nearly everyday without any prior warning and the login-screen appears. The same behavior in Gnome 3. Only LXDE seems to work (no crashes since I installed it
