So in the Ubuntu standard package gallium_drv_video.so is not package:

In oibaf for example it is package in the mesa-vdpau-drivers package.
Next problem is that vainfo does not recognize it by default. However with
export LIBVA_
My best solutions to the MythBuntu/XBMC/Kodi usecase:
1) Run a MythBuntu/XBMC/Kodi-session without any desktop at all! They're in
/usr/share/xsessions/
for running completely standalone.
2) Running a really minimal WM that doesn't try to manage screens at all like
Openbox. Works
well with Steam
One workaround is to install gnome-settings-daemon and check the box in
Xfce session settings to start gnome services on startup.

I can no longer reproduce this with latest xorg-edgers! Xorg-edgers
hadn't been updated in a while and then there was a big push around 2nd
or 4th May, and that solved it. I did not update the kernel when this
stopped happening, so the fix seems to be in userspace. No idea what to
backport...
