i had to manually do #1510573 to blacklist amdgpu and add the nomodeset flag
for the kernel.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out. I saw that comment yesterday. I tried
installing the latest 2.6.35 kernel from the ppa (The maverick
backported kernel), but the problem persists. Although I get an extra
sensor for the video adapter, the fans are not turned on automatically

have no power management with the ati open source drivers. The
difference is that in my case my fans are turned off and the computer
shuts itself down
I must correct myself. It DOES happen too with the fglrx proprietary
drivers. I tried OCRing and using a clutter-dependant plug in for
Banshee and the temperature rose nevertheless and computer had to shut
itself down again.
