It's weird. I tried a modified xorg.conf with just the "AccelMethod"
"XAA" and that ran as crappily as before (20-50% cpu time for X).
I decided trying to re-install vanilla Jaunty (quite radical solution,
but I figured I might have some crap installed I didn't remember and

Is your system running fine now? And could you perhaps post the contents
of your xorg.conf ?
I've got the same video card, running Kubuntu jaunty with latest updates
and experience these freezes all the time. Even when idle, the Xorg uses
20-50% of cpu time. And all of this without runn
I agree with Wolfgang. I don't even have compiz installed. Tags should
probably be xorg, ati and maybe kwin (although I doubt that kwin is the
perpetrator here..).

Ops, sorry. The whole procedure was done with the Kubuntu live CD.
I'll grab the ubuntu live CD and try it again with ubuntu. Results will
follow.

After the bootup with the live CD, the Desktop ran without compositing enabled.
The website ran fine, although in Konqueror (couldn't install firefox in the
live CD environment).
As soon as I enabled the compositing effects, the screen froze with the mouse
moving jerkily.
