The workaround also does not work for me, I also have an HP Pavilion
dm4. I find it strange that synclient -m does not output any useful
data at all, but the Alps pad is still present and recognized in the
xinput list. Are there any other related bugs to this one?

Chris, seems that You have correctly tracked down the problem. Removing
Plymouth fixes the problem for me. I am +1 to mark this bug as duplicate
of bug #522692 with different symptoms.

Gosh I have to press the 2 key in my password and I have to login

behaviour I have managed to find.
