Thanks for confirming that it's not a driver problem -- I took the liberty to mark the nvidia-bug as invalid. I also found a workaround: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1615358 With that workaround, the GDM doesn't get themed, but the desktop shows correctly. -- You received this bug

I hit those bug as well (Core i7, SSD, P55, 8800GTX) -- but I don't think it's related to the nVidia proprietary drivers: Even without those drivers, on first booting after installation, I get grey GNOME default panels. Also note that everything works fine when I use a jfs partition on the SSD,
