I just got affected by this bug.
I had Firefox, Rythmbox and LibreOffice Writer open. Firefox was idle (I was
not using it directly but there is my gmail, twitter, etc. web apps). Rythmbox
was idle (a song was playing, but I was not interacting with it). However, I
was using heavily Writer. I
Weird, I had removed the i915.powersave=0 and for a long time now (maybe a
month) I had almost no flickering (could count them on one hand).
However, today is hell. It is flickering every 3-4 minutes or so...
I've check back the history of recently installed software, and I only have
Chromium
The problem is still present with the latest kernel update: 2.6.32-22
Albeit, it seems less frequent, but still too much frequent.

I also affected by this bug with latest Lucid updates. I have Ubuntu Desktop
64bit on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.
However, I did follow Chris Jones advice (Comment #5) and it is working. I did
not have this sync flashes today during the whole time.

Thanks Chris. I can confirm that suppressing the xorg.conf file and rebooting
is working! I was quite surprised ;-)
Therefore, this bug does not affect me anylonger.

Sorry that I did not reply earlier, I thought I did.
Actually since Karmic, the bug seems to be solved. I can use the dual screen
properly either in UXA or EXA mode with or without 3D effects, and it is
working like a charm.
As far as I'm concern, the bug is corrected.
